All Natural Pain Relief. No Prescription Required.

Everyday in my office I see people in pain and suffering. Most of them have already been to their general practitioner that has given them a prescription for something that may hide or cover up the symptoms, but does nothing for the problem. So when the drug wears off the pain remains. The ill health, pain and suffering was and is not caused by a shortage of prescription drugs in our bodies.

How is this possible, since a child I am sure most of you have been told if you’re in pain you either suffer until it’s over or you go to the pharmacy and get some ibuprofen or Advil, if this doesn’t help the next stop is your GP and most likely something stronger (with more side effects).

What if the pain killers you are prescribed just dull the pain or start becoming less effective the longer you take them for. Maybe it’s time to reconsider your options.

What other options do you have, well there are some herbal and natural supplements that have been shown to sometimes help, or you may have heard about Chiropractic.

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a completely natural, gentle and effective treatment for pain originating from misaligned vertebra (bones) in the spine. Many a patient has crawled in to see me with severe back pain or with their neck frozen in a position as it’s too painful to move (after they have tried physical therapy, drugs, massage therapy, surgery). Following a short course of chiropractic spinal adjustments they discover that their immune system is stronger, they no longer have the pain that brought them in to see me, they no longer need to take the prescription drug they didn’t need in the first place, their range of motion has increased, they sleep better, etc….

Chiropractic focuses on restoring the integrity of the nervous system because it is the nervous system that controls all the other systems in our bodies. If your nervous system is not working as it should, then the systems it controls (all of them) can not work as good as they could. This can result in ill health, pain and suffering.

You do not need a referral to visit a chiropractor,
and you do not need a prescription.

Now what?

First, schedule your family so they can begin benefiting from chiropractic care.

Second, please forward this newsletter to friends and colleagues that are experiencing headaches, neck and/or back pain or experiencing ill health.

When your nerves work better, everything works better!

Sincerely,

Tom Kolarik, DC

7,000 Clinical Studies Concur – This Meat is a Clear Invitation to Cancer.

By Dr. Mercola

If you are for some reason choosing between rotisserie chicken and a hot dog, it turns out, surprisingly, that the hot dog may be the better option. That’s because hot dogs, and similar meats such as pepperoni and deli meats, are relatively free of carcinogenic compounds.

A study examined a number of ready-to-eat meat products for the presence of heterocyclic amines (HCAs). HCAs can increase your risk of stomach, colon and breast cancers.

According to MSNBC:

Pepperoni had the least HCA content … followed by hot dogs and deli meat … Fully cooked bacon … and rotisserie chicken meat … contained all five types of HCAs tested. Rotisserie chicken skin had significantly higher HCA levels”.

Sources:

Meat Science June 2011; 88(2): 227-233

Time Magazine March 28 2011

Dr. Mercola’s Comments:

You might have missed the media headlines last month which extolled hotdogs as better for you than chicken. If you click on the Time Magazine link above you can get a taste of this nonsense. This is a perfect example of how taking too narrow-minded a view can lead you astray from the truth about what’s healthy and what’s not.

Here, the researchers measured several different types of meats for levels of heterocyclic amines (HCAs), and because hot dogs and pepperoni happened to have lower levels of HCAs than rotisserie chicken, MSNBC leapt to the conclusion that these processed meats are better for you because they’re “relatively free of carcinogenic compounds.”

WRONG!

They’re just relatively lower in ONE type of carcinogenic compound!

But hot dogs and other processed meats contain OTHER compounds that put them squarely on the list of foods to avoid or eliminate entirely…

What You Need to Know about HCAs

Heterocyclic amines, or HCAs, are compounds created in meats and other foods that have been cooked at high temperatures. The worst part of the meat is the blackened section, which is why you should always avoid charring your meat, and never eat charred sections.

Studies have shown that humans who consume large amounts of HCAs have increased risk of stomach, colon and breast cancers.

But HCAs aren’t the only cancer-causing chemicals created during cooking. A couple of other well-known compounds include:

• Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs): Many processed meats are smoked as part of the curing process, which causes PAHs to form. PAH’s can also form when grilling. When fat drips onto the heat source, causing excess smoke, and the smoke surrounds your food, it can transfer cancer-causing PAHs to the meat.

• Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs): When food is cooked at high temperatures—including when it is pasteurized or sterilized—it increases the formation of AGEs in your food. AGEs build up in your body over time leading to oxidative stress, inflammation and an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and kidney disease.

In this particular study, published in the June issue of Meat Science, researchers specifically measured the HCA content of a variety of meats and found they contained the following amounts of this cancer-causing compound:

• Pepperoni–0.05 ng/g

• Hot dogs and deli meats–0.5 ng/g

• Fully cooked bacon–1.1 ng/g

• Rotisserie chicken–1.9 ng/g

• Rotisserie skin–16.3 ng/g

Clearly, when it comes to HCAs, the skin of rotisserie chicken is one of the worst culprits, so the advice to remove the skin is a good one. However, although they admit that other ready-to-eat processed meats contain lower HCA levels because they are enhanced with “a water solution with flavoring added to them,” MSNBC fails to add that these added ingredients make processed meats far from healthful.

You simply cannot judge the danger of a food by its HCA content alone, which is based on the manner in which its been cooked. You also have to evaluate all those added ingredients, such as preservatives, flavoring, and food colors.

Why You Should Avoid Processed Meats

Virtually all processed meats contain another well-known carcinogen: sodium nitrite. It’s a commonly used preservative and antimicrobial agent that also adds color and flavor to processed and cured meats. Hot dogs, deli meats and bacon are notorious for their nitrite content, so even though they might be low in HCA’s, they are far from healthful.

Nitrites can be converted into nitrosamines in your body, which are potent cancer-causing chemicals. Research has linked nitrites to higher rates of colorectal-, stomach- and pancreatic cancer.

Needless to say, should you choose to char your hot dog on the grill instead of heating it up in the microwave (which is what these researchers did) then you’d have both nitrites and HCA’s to contend with from that hot dog.

The truth is, processed meats are not a healthful choice for anyone and should be avoided entirely, according to a recent review of more than 7,000 clinical studies examining the connection between diet and cancer! The report was commissioned by The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) using money raised from the general public. Therefore the findings were not influenced by any vested interests, which makes it all the more reliable.

It’s the biggest review of the evidence ever undertaken, and it confirms previous findings: Processed meats increase your risk of cancer, especially bowel cancer, and NO amount of processed meat is “safe.” A previous analysis by the WCRF found that eating just one sausage a day raises your risk of developing bowel cancer by 20 percent!

Other studies have also found that processed meats increase your risk of:

• Colon cancer by 50 percent

• Bladder cancer by 59 percent

• Stomach cancer by 38 percent

• Pancreatic cancer by 67 percent

And that’s not all.

Hot dogs, bacon, salami and other processed meats may also increase your risk of diabetes by 50 percent, and lower your lung function and increase your risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

People who eat processed meats regularly also tend to eat fewer vegetables than others, which likely only compounds any health risks.

So what’s the moral of this story?

Don’t jump to conclusions based on piecemeal reporting. The overall evidence is actually pretty cut-and-dry: processed meats will raise your cancer risk and should be avoided as much as possible. So, don’t believe you’re eating healthier by switching from grilled chicken to hot dogs and other processed meats.

How to Shop for Less Harmful Hot Dogs and Deli Meats

Now, if you are going to eat hot dogs or other processed meats once in awhile, here are a few shopping tips to reduce their harmful health effects:

• Look for “uncured” varieties that contain NO nitrates

• Choose varieties that say 100% beef, 100% chicken, etc. This is the only way to know that the meat is from a single species and does not include byproducts (like chicken skin or chicken fat or other parts)

• Avoid any meat that contains MSG, high-fructose corn syrup, preservatives, artificial flavor or artificial color

• Ideally, purchase sausages and other processed meats from a small, local farmer who you can ask about the ingredients

Again, these are still not ideal as they’re still processed, but they are better than the vast majority of processed meats on the market.

Healthier Meat Choices

Now, if you want to eat truly healthful meat, make sure the meat is organic and grass-fed (preferably from a local farmer). Chickens should be organic, pastured chickens. This is an essential requirement healthy meat.

Meats from conventional Animal Feeding Operations (AFOs) are loaded with pesticides, hormones, antibiotics and other chemicals and should be avoided entirely.

To counteract some of the harmful effects of cooking, add homemade spice rubs, herb-enhanced marinades or even fresh blueberries to your meat prior to cooking it. This will not only impart added health benefits but will also help cut down on the harmful substances formed!

Better yet, use the same spice rubs and marinades, but eat the meat only lightly cooked or raw. Keep in mind though that when eating your meat raw, it’s IMPERATIVE that the meat is organically raised and grass-fed. Never eat conventional CAFO meats raw as – CAFO raised meats typically come from very unhealthy animals that can harbor dangerous infectious agents.

Be sure to get your spine checked regularly to make sure your nervous system is working properly. Allowing your body the best opportunity to recognize toxins and eliminate them before they can cause problems.

Medical Research Supports Chiropractic Wellness Care.

The following is a post from ChiroAcess April 19, 2011.

“Two research studies generated by the medical profession this year add evidence in support of the value of chiropractic maintenance care.

The first study published in January 2011 in Spine concluded that “SMT is effective for the treatment of chronic non specific LBP. To obtain long-term benefit, this study suggests maintenance spinal manipulations after the initial intensive manipulative therapy.”

The second study in April 2011, published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, provides additional support for the value of chiropractic maintenance care for post injury low back pain patients.  The study followed 894 injured workers for a period of one year.  During that year there were four different types of therapy available to the workers:  medical management, physical therapy, chiropractic, and no therapy.  Episodes of repeat disability were recorded during the year following the initial injury.  Physical therapy had the highest percentage of re-injured workers followed by those receiving medical management or no treatment at all.  The lowest incidence of repeat injury was found among those workers who had received chiropractic maintenance care.

The results of published surveys given to chiropractors have documented the profession’s belief in the value of maintenance care.  Furthermore, during the last decade there have been a dozen peer reviewed papers on the subject.  There are far more questions to be answered, but it is heartening to see medical research corroborate the studies and beliefs of the chiropractic profession.”

Visualize Your Dreams and Goals.

What are your dreams? Do you want to earn more money? Do you want to lose some weight? Do you want to be healthier?

Whatever your dreams are you can achieve them by following a few simple techniques.

When you dream how do you see yourself? Healthy and trim or overweight and sick. Wealthy, with all your bills paid and no mortgage or broke, unable to pay bills and getting behind on your mortgage.

I encourage you to visualize your life the way you want it to be. You must see it before you can be it or have it.

I recently read a story about the grand opening ceremony of Disney World in Orlando. Walt Disney had passed away prior to Disney World being completed. At the ceremony, the host recognized Mrs. Walt Disney’s attendance. He said “Mrs Disney, I just wish that Walt could have seen all this.” She reportedly stood up and said, “He did,” and sat back down.

He saw every detail of Disney World before it ever manifested. Where? In his imagination.

Albert Einstein said, “Your imagination is everything. It is a preview of life’s coming attractions.”

In a recent study by a professor at Virginia Tech, he found that people who wrote their goals (vision) earned nine times as much as those who didn’t! His research went on to reveal that when asked, “what are your goals for life” he found:

  • 80% said they didn’t know.
  • 16% said they have their goals but they’ve never written them down.
  • Only 4% said they’ve written their goals down but never have gone back to look at them.
  • 1% said they wrote their goals down and they review them on a weekly basis.

He went on to say… “do you know who those 1% are?”  Millionaires.

You can use the same formula to improve your health.

Step 1. Write down your goals and review weekly.

You must see it,  you must write it down, and you must review often what you want to achieve. If you do not they are only dreams and will not ever happen.

If you are trying to lose a few pounds are you writing down your goal and reviewing it often. Be specific. For example – “I will lose 15 pounds by April 1, 2011. Break down what you need to do – write a planimplement the plan.

If you are trying to improve your health, what are you doing about it? Do you see yourself as healthy in your vision? Have you written down your goal? Are you taking any steps to improve your health? Have you joined a gym? Have you started to eat healthier? Are you visiting your chiropractor as often as you should?

Optimal Health With Little Or No Medication, Part 5.

In case you missed my prior posts I wrote about how sickness is not the result of prescription drug shortage, and the necessity of Chiropractic care in achieving your optimal health. I also wrote about the importance of nutrition and why we must take supplements. In today’s post I will briefly discuss the role of exercise.

There is a obesity epidemic in children ages 2-19 with 33% overweight, leading to a dramatic increase in childhood diabetes. Obese children are much more likely to become obese adults with all of the degenerative diseases associated with obesity.

Regular exercise is required for optimal health. Walking is the oldest physical activity of the human race. Jordan Rubin, NMD, PhD., writes that a brisk one or two mile walk everyday increases enzyme and metabolic activity and may increase calorie burning for up to twelve hours afterward.

Stop looking for a parking space close to your destination instead choose a spot far across the parking lot and walk in from there. Choose to take the stairs, forget the elevators. Go for a walk in the woods or take a walk on the beach. Walk through your neighborhood and let your neighbors know that somebody really does live in your house. When the weather isn’t cooperating go walk in the mall.

We all need exercise. Walking requires no special equipment and no health club membership. So turn off the TV, turn off the computer, get off the couch, put away the potato chips and go for a walk. Start taking steps to improve your health.

If you are physically unable to walk, use a stationary bike or go swimming. There are many everyday low impact activities that you can do for exercise. Whatever it is, just do it.

There are no shortcuts for achieving your optimal health. But in my opinion, and the opinion of many other health care professionals, optimal health is a combination of regular chiropractic care, proper nutrition, supplementation, and exercise.

Optimal Health With Little or No Medication. Part 4.

In my previous post regarding optimal Health I have discussed the dangers of side effects from medical prescriptions, the importance of regular chiropractic care, and the importance of eating right. In this post I will briefly discuss the importance of nutritional supplements.

We are all exposed to contaminants and pollution through the air we breath, the foods we eat and the water we drink.  This exposure to pollution increases the free radicals in our bodies.

All atoms, with exception of free radicals, have an even number of electrons. Free radicals are atoms with an odd number or an unpaired electron. These are very unstable and are always trying to steal an electron from another atom. The atoms that make up our cells are bombarded thousands of times daily by these free radicals. This constant bombardment causes mutagenic damage to the DNA in these cells. When these cells duplicate their daughter cells are abnormal (cancer). Atoms are the building blocks of molecules and molecules are the building blocks cells. Cells are the building blocks for our tissues and our tissues are the building blocks of our organs and our organs of our systems. If the atoms are abnormal the molecules and cells are abnormal, the tissues, organs and systems they make up can not be normal. This is the cause or most of the degenerative diseases and cancers we are familiar with.

The best way to counter act the potential damage from free radicals is to eat foods that are high in antioxidants and supplement with a high quality antioxidant.

This leads to another question I frequently get is “What is the best supplement I can take?”

It goes without saying, but I will say it anyway, that the best way to receive vitamins and minerals is through the food we eat. Unfortunately we Americans eat way too much highly processed foods that contain virtually no vitamins or nutrients, only empty calories.

In my opinion there are many high quality supplements available on the market. In my office I recommend to my patients to take a multivitamin with essential minerals. Along with the multi I also recommend a high antioxidant such as SAXI from DrinkACT. SAXI contains New Zealand Black Currant, Mangosteen, Pomegranate, Acai, Elderberry, and Maqui (the highest antioxidant fruit discovered) all in a Aloe Vera base. Click here to compare leading antioxidants.

The multi with essential minerals will provide your body with the vitamins and minerals you need that the foods we eat may be lacking. Many of the foods we buy at the grocery store are lacking essential vitamins and minerals mainly because they are highly processed to improve appearance and shelf life.

Most degenerative disorders and diseases are proceeded by chronic inflammation. The “Harvard Health Letter” in April, 2006 states that chronic inflammation may be the common factor in many diseases. Leading many if not most researchers to believe that if you can prevent the inflammation you can prevent the disease.

Many leading scientist have stated that drinking a small amount of high antioxidant beverages will have a positive effect in terms of cancer prevention.

Inflammatory diseases such as: irritable bowl, crohns, rheumatoid arthritis, and skin rashes like eczema, psoriasis and many others respond very well to high antioxidant and high anti-inflammatory supplements.

There are no shortcuts for achieving optimal health.

In my nest post I will discuss the importance of regular exercise in your optimal health.

Optimal Health With Little or No Medication. Part 3.

In my previous posts I discussed the dangers of side effects from prescribed medications, and the very important role of Chiropractic care. In this post I will be discussing the importance of good nutrition and it’s role in optimal health.

There are so many theories about how we should eat and there are good aspects of many of them. Common sense tells us that we should eat to live and not live to eat. Science tells us to eat foods that are high in fiber, low in highly processed saturated fat. I believe we should try to eat 10 – 13 servings per day of fresh, preferably organic, fruits and vegetables. Meats when consumed should not exceed 1 – 2 servings per day. Lean meats such as organic grass fed beef and buffalo are good examples. All meats should be trimmed very lean. All meats with steroids and antibiotics should be avoided if possible. Fish should be wild caught and not farm raised. Try to eliminate or limit the amount of inflammation causing highly processed white flour and sugars. Instead try using whole wheat and natural sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup when possible. Do not drink any soda pop as it is loaded with highly processed chemicals and sweeteners. Breakfast should be the larges and most important meal of the day. Giving you all day to burn off the calories of your largest meal. Evening snacks should be limited. Drink plenty of pure water. All excess calories we consume that our body does not use is stored as fat.

If you are a milk drinker tray to consume only non homogenized milk. If non homogenized milk is not available limit the amount of homogenized milk you drink and use only low fat. The homogenization of milk is done only for appearance purposes. The process beaks down large fat globules into smaller pieces and suspends them in the milk so the cream does not rise to the top of the jug. The large fat globules prior to homogenization do not readily pass through the lining of the intestines are not easily absorbed into your blood stream. The now smaller fat globules easily pass through the intestines into the blood causing a much higher incidence of atherosclerotic build up in your blood vessels. Remember that the more a food is processed the worse it is for you.

There is an obesity epidemic in children ages 2-19, 33% are overweight, leading to a dramatic increase in childhood diabetes. Obese children are much more likely to become obese adults with all of the degenerative diseases associated with obesity.

The overall message here is to eat a well balanced diet of food in it’s natural state the way God intended it to be eaten. Stay away from highly processed foods.

In my next post I will discuss the importance of supplements in achieving optimal health.

What Is A Subluxation?

Subluxation is the term used to describe what happens when one of the vertebrae, or bones, in your spine loses it’s normal position. The word comes from two Latin; “sub”  meaning somewhat or slightly and “luxate” to dislocate. When this happens, the misaligned vertebra creates stress, tissue irritation and inflammation on the spinal nerves, blood vessels, and surrounding muscles. This pressure and stress can cause an disruption in the communication system(nerves) in your body’s normal self regulating and self healing  processes as the nerves in the spinal column extend to the entire body and its organs. As time goes on and this condition is left uncorrected, the damage to the bones, tissues and nerves gets progressively worse.

Subluxations occur in any number of ways a car accident, fall, sudden jar, or trauma are examples of  instances that may cause a subluxation.  Subluxation can also come from regular actions such as poor sleeping position, poor posture, or incorrect lifting processes.

Chiropractic Doctors are specialists in locating, analyzing and correcting subluxations.  A chiropractor works to restore the misaligned vertebrae to their proper position in the spinal column. Chiropractors use  spinal adjustments to move the bones of your spine to a more normal position. Your chiropractor, in most cases, will use their hands to applying pressure to the spine in a specific location and direction. The adjustment force helps restore the alignment and range of motion of the vertebrae.   Chiropractic adjustments are usually painless. It is common to experience a sense of well being  following an adjustment due to the  decompression of the affected nerves.

What Is Chiropractic?

Kolarik Family Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a non-invasive approach to all natural health and wellness care.

Chiropractic is based on well documented scientific fact. Your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism, controlled by the brain, spinal cord and nerves of the body. The vertebrae, which protect the nervous system, when misaligned or lose their normal motion, causes a decrease in the function of the nerves. This abnormally decreased nerve communication with the tissues, organs and systems throughout the body results in a body that can no longer function at it’s best. Unable to adapt.

Doctors of Chiropractic examine the spine and perform a spinal adjustment when a Subluxation (misalignment or decreased range of motion) is found. These spinal adjustments help to restore a more normal position and motion of the bones of the spine and will increase the communication through your nerves to the tissues and organs they connect with allowing you to be at your optimal level of health.
