That’s Not Chiropractic. Chiropractic Is Specific Or It Is Nothing.

Recently I attended a large public awareness and fundraising event.  While I enjoyed the event’s entertainment I was also pleasantly surprised that they allowed a Chiropractor to set up.  But, after watching him off and on while we were enjoying the music and food I was in a state of shock at what I saw.  This chiropractor was doing exactly the same thing to everybody he adjusted at this event. Not once did this chiropractor palpate the spine or preform any of the many simple checks he could have done that may have indicated the presence of a subluxation. Everybody he “adjusted” (I am using this term very loosely) received five moves. First he had them lay face down and he would push down in three (not two or four) locations, second he would have them lay on their right side and he would crack their low back then roll them onto their left side and crack their low back, then he would them lay on their back and he would crack their neck to the right then he would crack their neck to the left. I say crack because he certainly was not adjusting a subluxation nor was he, in my opinion, practicing chiropractic.  This chiropractor is doing a great disservice to my chosen profession. Really it made me sick to think about how much damage he did to the recipients of his free “adjustment.”

If your chiropractor “adjusts” you like this you need a new chiropractor.  Chiropractic is specific or it is nothing.

Let me ask you a question. If your chiropractor moves a vertebra one direction, does it make any sense at all for him to immediately move it back? The answer is a resounding NO.

True Chiropractic doctors examine your spine looking for spinal misalignment. A misalignment in the spine can cause an interference with the information carried by the nerves exiting the spine at that particular level. This interference decreases the body’s ability to adapt, decreases immune function, and a whole host of other problems.

Specific chiropractic spinal adjustments help to restore misaligned bones to a more normal position thus improving spinal function. Allowing soft tissue to heal, inflammation to go down, pain to ease, and improving spinal stability.

A real chiropractic adjustment is specific. It is not twisting and popping back and forth, to the right and then to the left.

Chiropractors gently correct the problem by using a broad range of adjusting methods. By correcting subluxations and restoring proper nerve flow, chiropractors help people enjoy more of their full potential for health and optimal performance. It’s about helping people of all ages – from infancy to active senior living – to enjoy better health under chiropractic care.

“Pinched Nerve” and Chiropractic.

Pinched Nerve

It’s called a pinched nerve because that’s what it feels like, pain. But what’s going on!

Definition from the Mayo Clinic: A pinched nerve occurs when too much pressure is applied to a nerve by surrounding tissues — such as bones, cartilage, muscles or tendons. This pressure disrupts the nerve’s function, causing pain, tingling, numbness or weakness There are pairs of opening between each spinal bone.]

These openings openings along your spine must be clear and unobstructed.

The 24 moving bones of your spine protect your spinal cord while permitting normal turning and bending. Pairs of nerve roots, one on each side, branch off your spinal cord at each segmental level to provide instructions to the organs and tissues of your body. When these openings are obstructed, even slightly, your brain can’t properly adapt and regulate your body.

When a spinal bone is misaligned, or fixated, it can move decreasing these nerve openings and causing nerve irritation.  Chiropractors call that a subluxation.

When spinal bones lose their normal motion or position, it can cause one of two types of nerve disturbances:

  • Compressed lesion -Pinched nerve.  What surprises many is that it’s actually quite rare.
  • Facilitative lesion – This is when the nerve root is stretched, twisted or chafed. This is much more common than the actual pinched nerve above.

Bones can’t move unless muscles move them. And muscles don’t move bones unless instructed by the nervous system. Your chiropractors job is to locate these misaligned areas of your spine and preform spinal adjustments to improve integrity of your nervous system.

Specific push

A chiropractic spinal examination helps us identify areas of your spine where spinal bones are misaligned. Then, we give them a specific, gentle, but quick little push in the direction they need to be moved. We call this a chiropractic adjustment. Your body uses this energy to help correct itself and nerve irritation is reduced.

Because regular chiropractic care improves the integrity of your nervous system, it’s a natural alternative to many health problems.

Neck Pain And Chiropractic

Have you ever tried to balance a 10-15 pound bowling ball on the finger tips of just one hand?

Well that is what your neck (cervical spine) does all day, 24/7/, 365 days a year.

Your neck and shoulder muscles work very hard holding up your head. Your neck, or cervical spine, is made up of seven vertebra that must be in the proper position or relationship to each other for them to work correctly and efficiently. A structural misalignment of even the tiniest amount can cause muscle pain and discomfort, this is one of the main causes of headaches. This misalignment can put pressure, either directly or indirectly, on the nerves exiting the spinal cord at the affected level. Doctors of Chiropractic call this a Subluxation.

Some over-the-counter and prescribed pain relievers might dull the pain, but they ignore the underlying cause!

Chiropractors see this sort of thing all the time. It’s almost routine. Chiropractic care has a long history of producing excellent benefits with those suffering from neck pain. And we do it naturally, without dangerous drugs or risky, dangerous, surgery.

Chiropractors get great results with many types of neck pain.

At Kolarik Family Chiropractic we specialize in reducing interference to the nervous system in the neck. Many of our patients find that chiropractic care gives them relief from neck and shoulder complaints.

Headaches and Chiropractic.

Headaches are common, about 1 in 6 (45 million) Americans suffer from chronic headaches, but they’re not normal.

We live in a world where we want it now, hence the culture on drugs we live in. Many people with headaches will take some kind of anti-inflammatory to help relieve their suffering and many times it works – at least for a while. You need to ask yourself what is causing the inflammation in the first place? Chiropractors look for the underlying cause of your headache.

One of the most  common causes of headaches is from spinal bones in the neck that have lost their normal position and are not supporting your head properly . These misalignment’s are called subluxations  and they affect nerves, muscles and even the blood supply to your head.

A thorough Chiropractic examination locates subluxations that could be causing your headaches. If subluxations are present, you’re likely to benefit from Chiropractic spinal adjustments.

Back Pain And Chiropractic.

Back pain is a signal that something is not right. A sign that you have a problem that need addressing. The pain is a symptom of the problem, not the problem itself. Are you taking a drug, either over the counter or prescribed, to hide the symptom and ignore the cause?

There are many causes of back pain.

A couple of the more common causes are:

1)  The bones of you spine, specifically in your low back or lumbar region are misaligned. This misalignment is called a Subluxation and causes pain.

2) You may have experienced a trauma that has injured a disc and caused it to bulge. Discs are the soft, pulpy, tissue between the spinal bones. When the disc bulge they may put pressure on a nearby nerve causing pain.

What are you going to do about it?

A) Ignore it. (Most likely the condition will worsen, not a good idea)

B) Physical therapy. (Stresses misaligned joints, does not address the cause, not a good idea)

C) Drugs, either prescribed or over the counter. (Numbs the body, masks the symptom, does not address the cause, not a good idea)

D) Surgery. (Dangerous, very expensive, dismal success rate, usually leads to additional unnecessary surgeries, does not address the cause, not a good idea)

According to Dr. Norman Marcus is Clinical Associate Professor in Anesthesiology and Psychiatry and Director of Muscle Pain Research at the N.Y.U. School of Medicine, a past president of the American Academy of Pain Medicine and founder and medical director of the Norman Marcus Pain Institute, which is dedicated to pain elimination, rather than pain management. In an article on EmaxHealth written by Ruzanna Harutyunyan. “… Dr. Marcus notes that most MRIs of the low back are read as abnormal, frequently with herniated or bulging disks, and that as many as 50 percent of people with herniated disks have no back pain, while as many as 70 percent of those with degenerated lumbar disks have no pain. He cautions that, conversely, discovering herniated or degenerated disks in the spine of a patient in pain should never automatically lead to the assumption that the pain is originating from those disks. …”

The Chiropractic Approach.

Specific chiropractic spinal adjustments help to restore misaligned bones to a more normal position thus improving spinal function. Allowing soft tissue to heal, inflammation to go down, pain to ease, and improving spinal stability.

Optimal Health With Little or No Medication. Part 4.

In my previous post regarding optimal Health I have discussed the dangers of side effects from medical prescriptions, the importance of regular chiropractic care, and the importance of eating right. In this post I will briefly discuss the importance of nutritional supplements.

We are all exposed to contaminants and pollution through the air we breath, the foods we eat and the water we drink.  This exposure to pollution increases the free radicals in our bodies.

All atoms, with exception of free radicals, have an even number of electrons. Free radicals are atoms with an odd number or an unpaired electron. These are very unstable and are always trying to steal an electron from another atom. The atoms that make up our cells are bombarded thousands of times daily by these free radicals. This constant bombardment causes mutagenic damage to the DNA in these cells. When these cells duplicate their daughter cells are abnormal (cancer). Atoms are the building blocks of molecules and molecules are the building blocks cells. Cells are the building blocks for our tissues and our tissues are the building blocks of our organs and our organs of our systems. If the atoms are abnormal the molecules and cells are abnormal, the tissues, organs and systems they make up can not be normal. This is the cause or most of the degenerative diseases and cancers we are familiar with.

The best way to counter act the potential damage from free radicals is to eat foods that are high in antioxidants and supplement with a high quality antioxidant.

This leads to another question I frequently get is “What is the best supplement I can take?”

It goes without saying, but I will say it anyway, that the best way to receive vitamins and minerals is through the food we eat. Unfortunately we Americans eat way too much highly processed foods that contain virtually no vitamins or nutrients, only empty calories.

In my opinion there are many high quality supplements available on the market. In my office I recommend to my patients to take a multivitamin with essential minerals. Along with the multi I also recommend a high antioxidant such as SAXI from DrinkACT. SAXI contains New Zealand Black Currant, Mangosteen, Pomegranate, Acai, Elderberry, and Maqui (the highest antioxidant fruit discovered) all in a Aloe Vera base. Click here to compare leading antioxidants.

The multi with essential minerals will provide your body with the vitamins and minerals you need that the foods we eat may be lacking. Many of the foods we buy at the grocery store are lacking essential vitamins and minerals mainly because they are highly processed to improve appearance and shelf life.

Most degenerative disorders and diseases are proceeded by chronic inflammation. The “Harvard Health Letter” in April, 2006 states that chronic inflammation may be the common factor in many diseases. Leading many if not most researchers to believe that if you can prevent the inflammation you can prevent the disease.

Many leading scientist have stated that drinking a small amount of high antioxidant beverages will have a positive effect in terms of cancer prevention.

Inflammatory diseases such as: irritable bowl, crohns, rheumatoid arthritis, and skin rashes like eczema, psoriasis and many others respond very well to high antioxidant and high anti-inflammatory supplements.

There are no shortcuts for achieving optimal health.

In my nest post I will discuss the importance of regular exercise in your optimal health.

Optimal Health With Little or No Medication. Part 3.

In my previous posts I discussed the dangers of side effects from prescribed medications, and the very important role of Chiropractic care. In this post I will be discussing the importance of good nutrition and it’s role in optimal health.

There are so many theories about how we should eat and there are good aspects of many of them. Common sense tells us that we should eat to live and not live to eat. Science tells us to eat foods that are high in fiber, low in highly processed saturated fat. I believe we should try to eat 10 – 13 servings per day of fresh, preferably organic, fruits and vegetables. Meats when consumed should not exceed 1 – 2 servings per day. Lean meats such as organic grass fed beef and buffalo are good examples. All meats should be trimmed very lean. All meats with steroids and antibiotics should be avoided if possible. Fish should be wild caught and not farm raised. Try to eliminate or limit the amount of inflammation causing highly processed white flour and sugars. Instead try using whole wheat and natural sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup when possible. Do not drink any soda pop as it is loaded with highly processed chemicals and sweeteners. Breakfast should be the larges and most important meal of the day. Giving you all day to burn off the calories of your largest meal. Evening snacks should be limited. Drink plenty of pure water. All excess calories we consume that our body does not use is stored as fat.

If you are a milk drinker tray to consume only non homogenized milk. If non homogenized milk is not available limit the amount of homogenized milk you drink and use only low fat. The homogenization of milk is done only for appearance purposes. The process beaks down large fat globules into smaller pieces and suspends them in the milk so the cream does not rise to the top of the jug. The large fat globules prior to homogenization do not readily pass through the lining of the intestines are not easily absorbed into your blood stream. The now smaller fat globules easily pass through the intestines into the blood causing a much higher incidence of atherosclerotic build up in your blood vessels. Remember that the more a food is processed the worse it is for you.

There is an obesity epidemic in children ages 2-19, 33% are overweight, leading to a dramatic increase in childhood diabetes. Obese children are much more likely to become obese adults with all of the degenerative diseases associated with obesity.

The overall message here is to eat a well balanced diet of food in it’s natural state the way God intended it to be eaten. Stay away from highly processed foods.

In my next post I will discuss the importance of supplements in achieving optimal health.
