Medical Research Supports Chiropractic Wellness Care.

“Two research studies generated by the medical profession this year add evidence in support of the value of chiropractic maintenance care.

The first study published in January 2011 in Spine concluded that “SMT is effective for the treatment of chronic non specific LBP. To obtain long-term benefit, this study suggests maintenance spinal manipulations after the initial intensive manipulative therapy.”

The second study in April 2011, published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, provides additional support for the value of chiropractic maintenance care for post injury low back pain patients.  The study followed 894 injured workers for a period of one year.  During that year there were four different types of therapy available to the workers:  medical management, physical therapy,chiropractic, and no therapy.  Episodes of repeat disability were recorded during the year following the initial injury.  Physical therapy had the highest percentage of re-injured workers followed by those receiving medical management or no treatment at all.  The lowest incidence of repeat injury was found among those workers who had received chiropractic maintenance care.

The results of published surveys given to chiropractors have documented the profession’s belief in the value of maintenance care.  Furthermore, during the last decade there have been a dozen peer reviewed papers on the subject.  There are far more questions to be answered, but it is heartening to see medical research corroborate the studies and beliefs of the chiropractic profession.”

Headaches and Chiropractic.

Headaches are common, about 1 in 6 (45 million) Americans suffer from chronic headaches, but they’re not normal.

We live in a world where we want it now, hence the culture on drugs we live in. Many people with headaches will take some kind of anti-inflammatory to help relieve their suffering and many times it works – at least for a while. Why didn’t anybody tell me about this?

Tears rolled down his face as he asked me, “Why didn’t anybody tell me about this?”  This sixty-one year old man broke down and cried when he heard what caused twenty plus years of suffering, frequent visits to his medical doctor, bottles of prescriptions that offered no relief, only additional problems (side effects).

This gentleman came to see me for chronic constipation as a last resort only because he had been everywhere and tried everything with no success. During my consultation he told me he has only one BM per month, he also mentioned that he had some minor neck pain. After I explained what we do here in this office he reluctantly decided to give chiropractic a try. During the exam I found evidence of subluxation in two area; his neck , and his lumbars. It was during the report of findings that he wept, when I explained what has caused twenty years of suffering, subluxations. He wept when he heard, and understood, the simplicity of chiropractic. He wept as I told him that if we can correct his subluxations his body would work better and just maybe his BM’s would become more regular.

As I raised the table following his first chiropractic adjustments he asked where the bathroom is because he needed it NOW! Another chiropractic miracle. You see when the subluxation was corrected his innate took over and he saw results immediately. This gentleman continued to come and get his spine checked for subluxation and receive adjustments when necessary for years. During a visit about three months later he asked me if hearing and sight could be affected by adjustments? I answered yes, and reminded him that all of our  systems are controlled by the nervous system. “Why ?” I asked.  “Doc, I never told you I was deaf in my left ear and blind in my left eye. But, ever since I started getting my neck and back adjusted my hearing and my sight have nearly returned to normal. Do you think that what you’re doing is causing this to happen?” I explained to him that chiropractic only corrected the subluxations and that it was his own body that did the healing once the interference was removed.

I do this because it changes peoples lives.

Back Pain And Chiropractic.

Back pain is a signal that something is not right. A sign that you have a problem that need addressing. The pain is a symptom of the problem, not the problem itself. Are you taking a drug, either over the counter or prescribed, to hide the symptom and ignore the cause?

There are many causes of back pain.

A couple of the more common causes are:

1)  The bones of you spine, specifically in your low back or lumbar region are misaligned. This misalignment is called a Subluxation and causes pain.

2) You may have experienced a trauma that has injured a disc and caused it to bulge. Discs are the soft, pulpy, tissue between the spinal bones. When the disc bulge they may put pressure on a nearby nerve causing pain.

What are you going to do about it?

A) Ignore it. (Most likely the condition will worsen, not a good idea)

B) Physical therapy. (Stresses misaligned joints, does not address the cause, not a good idea)

C) Drugs, either prescribed or over the counter. (Numbs the body, masks the symptom, does not address the cause, not a good idea)

D) Surgery. (Dangerous, very expensive, dismal success rate, usually leads to additional unnecessary surgeries, does not address the cause, not a good idea)

According to Dr. Norman Marcus is Clinical Associate Professor in Anesthesiology and Psychiatry and Director of Muscle Pain Research at the N.Y.U. School of Medicine, a past president of the American Academy of Pain Medicine and founder and medical director of the Norman Marcus Pain Institute, which is dedicated to pain elimination, rather than pain management. In an article on EmaxHealth written by Ruzanna Harutyunyan. “… Dr. Marcus notes that most MRIs of the low back are read as abnormal, frequently with herniated or bulging disks, and that as many as 50 percent of people with herniated disks have no back pain, while as many as 70 percent of those with degenerated lumbar disks have no pain. He cautions that, conversely, discovering herniated or degenerated disks in the spine of a patient in pain should never automatically lead to the assumption that the pain is originating from those disks. …”

The Chiropractic Approach.

I recently read a story about the grand opening ceremony of Disney World in Orlando. Walt Disney had passed away prior to Disney World being completed. At the ceremony, the host recognized Mrs. Walt Disney’s attendance. He said “Mrs Disney, I just wish that Walt could have seen all this.” She reportedly stood up and said, “He did,” and sat back down.

He saw every detail of Disney World before it ever manifested. Where? In his imagination.

Albert Einstein said, “Your imagination is everything. It is a preview of life’s coming attractions.”

In a recent study by a professor at Virginia Tech, he found that people who wrote their goals (vision) earned nine times as much as those who didn’t! His research went on to reveal that when asked, “what are your goals for life” he found:

  • 80% said they didn’t know.
  • 16% said they have their goals but they’ve never written them down.
  • Only 4% said they’ve written their goals down but never have gone back to look at them.
  • 1% said they wrote their goals down and they review them on a weekly basis.

He went on to say… “do you know who those 1% are?”  Millionaires.

You can use the same formula to improve your health.

Step 1. Write down your goals and review weekly.

You must see it,  you must write it down, and you must review often what you want to achieve. If you do not they are only dreams and will not ever happen.

If you are trying to lose a few pounds are you writing down your goal and reviewing it often. Be specific. For example – “I will lose 15 pounds by April 1, 2011. Break down what you need to do – write a planimplement the plan.

If you are trying to improve your health, what are you doing about it? Do you see yourself as healthy in your vision? Have you written down your goal? Are you taking any steps to improve your health? Have you joined a gym? Have you started to eat healthier? Are you visiting your chiropractor as often as you should?

Optimal Health With Little or No Medication. Part 3.

In my previous posts I discussed the dangers of side effects from prescribed medications, and the very important role of Chiropractic care. In this post I will be discussing the importance of good nutrition and it’s role in optimal health.

There are so many theories about how we should eat and there are good aspects of many of them. Common sense tells us that we should eat to live and not live to eat. Science tells us to eat foods that are high in fiber, low in highly processed saturated fat. I believe we should try to eat 10 – 13 servings per day of fresh, preferably organic, fruits and vegetables. Meats when consumed should not exceed 1 – 2 servings per day. Lean meats such as organic grass fed beef and buffalo are good examples. All meats should be trimmed very lean. All meats with steroids and antibiotics should be avoided if possible. Fish should be wild caught and not farm raised. Try to eliminate or limit the amount of inflammation causing highly processed white flour and sugars. Instead try using whole wheat and natural sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup when possible. Do not drink any soda pop as it is loaded with highly processed chemicals and sweeteners. Breakfast should be the larges and most important meal of the day. Giving you all day to burn off the calories of your largest meal. Evening snacks should be limited. Drink plenty of pure water. All excess calories we consume that our body does not use is stored as fat.

If you are a milk drinker tray to consume only non homogenized milk. If non homogenized milk is not available limit the amount of homogenized milk you drink and use only low fat. The homogenization of milk is done only for appearance purposes. The process beaks down large fat globules into smaller pieces and suspends them in the milk so the cream does not rise to the top of the jug. The large fat globules prior to homogenization do not readily pass through the lining of the intestines are not easily absorbed into your blood stream. The now smaller fat globules easily pass through the intestines into the blood causing a much higher incidence of atherosclerotic build up in your blood vessels. Remember that the more a food is processed the worse it is for you.

There is an obesity epidemic in children ages 2-19, 33% are overweight, leading to a dramatic increase in childhood diabetes. Obese children are much more likely to become obese adults with all of the degenerative diseases associated with obesity.

The overall message here is to eat a well balanced diet of food in it’s natural state the way God intended it to be eaten. Stay away from highly processed foods.

Optimal Health with Little or No Medication. Part 2.

To recap, in part one I discussed the dangers of medically prescribed drugs and the dangers of side effects.

In this post I will be discussing the role of chiropractic care in achieving optimal health.

Chiropractic is based on the science that shows that our nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ and system of our body. Our nervous system consists of your brain, spinal cord, and millions of nerves. Many everyday activities can cause the spinal bones to lose their normal position or motion causing nervous system dysfunction. Doctors of Chiropractic call this nervous system dysfunction “Vertebral Subluxation Complex” or Subluxation for short. The Chiropractic approach to optimal health is to examine your spine for subluxation and if one is found administer a gentle spinal adjustment. A spinal adjustment helps to restore normal position and motion to the bones of your spine but, more importantly improves the communication (nervous) system. With a nervous system that is working properly your body is better able to adapt to your daily life; better able to fight off a bacterial or viral infection, better able to heal itself, better able to turn the food you eat into a healthy you and better able to self regulate itself.

Without normal nerve supply, affected organs and tissue is more susceptible to disease, often producing the symptoms of pain ill health. Headaches and low back pain can be traced to back to spinal malfunction and nervous system dysfunction. Doctors of Chiropractic are the only specialist extensively educated and trained in the detection, reduction and prevention of nervous system interference. Your doctor will use specific chiropractic adjustments to return malfunctioning spinal bones to their proper motion and position, reducing nervous system interference.

Chiropractic spinal adjustments are safer than dangerous and risky back surgery, muscle relaxers and even aspirin. Chiropractic adjustments are so safe that even newborn babies can receive spinal adjustments when necessary.

It doesn’t matter what type of doctor you you consult, remember doctors don’t heal, only your body can heal itself and it can do that better without a subluxation (nervous system dysfunction). The chiropractic approach to optimal health is to remove the interferences to your inborn healing ability.

Everyone with a spine needs regular, minimum of 2 per month, chiropractic exams and adjustments when necessary to maintain good spinal health, remember our nerves are the communication system in our bodies. If the communication system is not working properly how can anything else work properly? That’s right it doesn’t.

Chiropractic makes sense. It’s scientific. It’s only provided by well educated doctors. It’s natural. Most importantly  it works to correct the underlying cause(s) of your problem and it works.

Optimal Health. Part 1 of 5.

Many of my patients have asked me how they can become healthier (optimal health). The answer to that all important question is really quite simple. But for many not so easy to accomplish.

Our health is a compilation of our lifestyle habits. Bad habits generally lead to poor results and good habits generally lead to good results. Results being your health and happiness.

**NEWSFLASH**

Sickness and disease is not the result of a prescription drug shortage.

In a recent article published in the Dynamic Chiropractic, September 14, 2006 issue, they report the high cost of medical mistakes can increasingly be calculated in lives and dollars. According to the latest estimates from the Institute of Medicine (IOM). a staggering 1.5 million Americans are the victims of medication errors every year, with approximately 400,000 of these errors considered preventable. “The frequency of medication errors and preventable medication related injuries represents a very serious cause for concern,” states the report. “The committee estimates that on average, a hospital patient is subject to at least one least one medication error per day … at least one quarter of all medication-related injuries are preventable.” Those errors contributed directly to injury and/or death.”

In 2003, a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggested that 27% of all adverse drug events experienced by Medicare patients 65 and older were preventable, and that “most” were attributed to medical doctor error.

Don’t be fooled by medical doctors when they tell you that a certain drug has no side effects because all drugs have side effects. Anything that is put into our body that the body does not recognize as food is a foreign substance (drug). At that point the body does everything it can to filter out that substance and remove it from your body. This puts an undue strain on the filters (kidneys and liver) in your body. Most, over 50%, kidney failures a directly caused by prescription medication.

In my opinion we need to severely reduce the amount of drugs prescribed. Americans are the most medicated society on the planet.
