Medical Research Supports Chiropractic Wellness Care.

The following is a post from ChiroAcess April 19, 2011.

“Two research studies generated by the medical profession this year add evidence in support of the value of chiropractic maintenance care.

The first study published in January 2011 in Spine concluded that “SMT is effective for the treatment of chronic non specific LBP. To obtain long-term benefit, this study suggests maintenance spinal manipulations after the initial intensive manipulative therapy.”

The second study in April 2011, published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, provides additional support for the value of chiropractic maintenance care for post injury low back pain patients.  The study followed 894 injured workers for a period of one year.  During that year there were four different types of therapy available to the workers:  medical management, physical therapy, chiropractic, and no therapy.  Episodes of repeat disability were recorded during the year following the initial injury.  Physical therapy had the highest percentage of re-injured workers followed by those receiving medical management or no treatment at all.  The lowest incidence of repeat injury was found among those workers who had received chiropractic maintenance care.

The results of published surveys given to chiropractors have documented the profession’s belief in the value of maintenance care.  Furthermore, during the last decade there have been a dozen peer reviewed papers on the subject.  There are far more questions to be answered, but it is heartening to see medical research corroborate the studies and beliefs of the chiropractic profession.”

That’s Not Chiropractic. Chiropractic Is Specific Or It Is Nothing.

Recently I attended a large public awareness and fundraising event.  While I enjoyed the event’s entertainment I was also pleasantly surprised that they allowed a Chiropractor to set up.  But, after watching him off and on while we were enjoying the music and food I was in a state of shock at what I saw.  This chiropractor was doing exactly the same thing to everybody he adjusted at this event. Not once did this chiropractor palpate the spine or preform any of the many simple checks he could have done that may have indicated the presence of a subluxation. Everybody he “adjusted” (I am using this term very loosely) received five moves. First he had them lay face down and he would push down in three (not two or four) locations, second he would have them lay on their right side and he would crack their low back then roll them onto their left side and crack their low back, then he would them lay on their back and he would crack their neck to the right then he would crack their neck to the left. I say crack because he certainly was not adjusting a subluxation nor was he, in my opinion, practicing chiropractic.  This chiropractor is doing a great disservice to my chosen profession. Really it made me sick to think about how much damage he did to the recipients of his free “adjustment.”

If your chiropractor “adjusts” you like this you need a new chiropractor.  Chiropractic is specific or it is nothing.

Let me ask you a question. If your chiropractor moves a vertebra one direction, does it make any sense at all for him to immediately move it back? The answer is a resounding NO.

True Chiropractic doctors examine your spine looking for spinal misalignment. A misalignment in the spine can cause an interference with the information carried by the nerves exiting the spine at that particular level. This interference decreases the body’s ability to adapt, decreases immune function, and a whole host of other problems.

Specific chiropractic spinal adjustments help to restore misaligned bones to a more normal position thus improving spinal function. Allowing soft tissue to heal, inflammation to go down, pain to ease, and improving spinal stability.

A real chiropractic adjustment is specific. It is not twisting and popping back and forth, to the right and then to the left.

Chiropractors gently correct the problem by using a broad range of adjusting methods. By correcting subluxations and restoring proper nerve flow, chiropractors help people enjoy more of their full potential for health and optimal performance. It’s about helping people of all ages – from infancy to active senior living – to enjoy better health under chiropractic care.

Dr. Tom Kolarik practices at Kolarik Family Chiropractic in Travelers Rest, South Carolina, SC.  Dr. Kolarik offers gentle, conservative chiropractic services in the Travelers Rest and surrounding area.  Dr. Tom offers affordable individual and family plans.

Chiropractic And Wellness

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts which is based upon the understanding that good health depends, in part, upon a properly functioning nervous system (especially the spine, and the nerves extending from the spine to all parts of the body). “Chiropractic” comes from the Greek word Chiropraktikos, meaning “effective treatment by hand.” Chiropractic stresses the idea that the cause of many disease processes begins with the body’s inability to adapt to its environment.

Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism, controlled by the brain, spinal cord and nerves of the body. The vertebrae, which protect the nervous system, when misaligned or lose its normal motion, causes malfunction of the tissues and organs throughout the body.

What is Wellness?

The word “wellness” has no universally accepted definition, but we should know that it has nothing to do crisis care as delivered in a hospital setting.

WELLNESS: “A purposeful choice of a lifestyle characterized by personal responsibility, self-control, good nutrition, exercise and faith to achieve maximum personal enhancement of physical, mental, and emotional health.”

“The power that made the body is the only power that can heal the body, it happens no other way.”

“Pinched Nerve” and Chiropractic.

Pinched Nerve

It’s called a pinched nerve because that’s what it feels like, pain. But what’s going on!

Definition from the Mayo Clinic: A pinched nerve occurs when too much pressure is applied to a nerve by surrounding tissues — such as bones, cartilage, muscles or tendons. This pressure disrupts the nerve’s function, causing pain, tingling, numbness or weakness There are pairs of opening between each spinal bone.]

These openings openings along your spine must be clear and unobstructed.

The 24 moving bones of your spine protect your spinal cord while permitting normal turning and bending. Pairs of nerve roots, one on each side, branch off your spinal cord at each segmental level to provide instructions to the organs and tissues of your body. When these openings are obstructed, even slightly, your brain can’t properly adapt and regulate your body.

When a spinal bone is misaligned, or fixated, it can move decreasing these nerve openings and causing nerve irritation.  Chiropractors call that a subluxation.

When spinal bones lose their normal motion or position, it can cause one of two types of nerve disturbances:

  • Compressed lesion -Pinched nerve.  What surprises many is that it’s actually quite rare.
  • Facilitative lesion – This is when the nerve root is stretched, twisted or chafed. This is much more common than the actual pinched nerve above.

Bones can’t move unless muscles move them. And muscles don’t move bones unless instructed by the nervous system. Your chiropractors job is to locate these misaligned areas of your spine and preform spinal adjustments to improve integrity of your nervous system.

Specific push

A chiropractic spinal examination helps us identify areas of your spine where spinal bones are misaligned. Then, we give them a specific, gentle, but quick little push in the direction they need to be moved. We call this a chiropractic adjustment. Your body uses this energy to help correct itself and nerve irritation is reduced.

Because regular chiropractic care improves the integrity of your nervous system, it’s a natural alternative to many health problems.

Children, ADHD And Chiropractic.

Note: Chiropractors do not treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

However, since ADHD appears as a neurological disorder and regular chiropractic care spinal adjustments attempt to reduce nervous system interferences, many parents who want a natural, drug free solution for their child have found regular chiropractic care helpful.

The most common signs that parents notice:

  • Lack of attention
  • Hyperactivity
  • Easily distracted
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty sitting still
  • Always moving

Start making nutritional and lifestyle changes if necessary. Also try to rule out environmental factors by reducing or eliminating your child’s exposure to substances that are increasingly common these days such as:

  • Food dyes, preservatives and additives from the diet.
  • Pesticides or herbicides.
  • Determine if an allergy is involved such as dairy or gluten and eliminate.
  • Sugars, artificial sweeteners, and high fructose corn syrup
  • Fabric softeners and other chemicals.

The above list is wise to remove even with a normal healthy child.

A popular medical approach to controlling symptoms of ADHD is to prescribe Ritalin®.

Ritalin® is a schedule II controlled substance related to, and producing similar effects as, amphetamines and cocaine. The side effects listed in the Physicians Desk Reference include: Nervousness and insomnia are the most common adverse reactions but are usually controlled by reducing dosage and omitting the drug in the afternoon or evening. Other reactions include hypersensitivity (including skin rash, urticaria, fever, arthralgia, exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme with histopathological findings of necrotizing vasculitis, and thrombocytopenic purpura); anorexia; nausea; dizziness; palpitations; headache; dyskinesia; drowsiness; blood pressure and pulse changes, both up and down; tachycardia; angina; cardiac arrhythmia; abdominal pain; weight loss during prolonged therapy. There have been rare reports of Tourette’s syndrome. Toxic psychosis has been reported. Although a definite causal relationship has not been established, the following have been reported in patients taking this drug: leukopenia and/or anemia; a few instances of scalp hair loss. In children, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, weight loss during prolonged therapy, insomnia, and tachycardia may occur more frequently; however, any of the other adverse reactions listed above may also occur.

The Chiropractic Approach

Instead of treating the various symptoms of hyperactivity, we look for interfences to the child’s nervous system. We often find problems caused by spinal misalignment’s, aka subluxation, in the child’s upper neck.

In fact, this link between the spine, brain stem dysfunction and ADHD is common. A thorough chiropractic examination can and may reveal noticeable spinal misalignments, subluxation, even a reversal of the normal neck curve. That why we often recommend a schedule of safe, gentle, and natural chiropractic spinal adjustments to help restore normal spinal alignment and to reduce the accompanying nervous system interference.

Neck Pain And Chiropractic

Have you ever tried to balance a 10-15 pound bowling ball on the finger tips of just one hand?

Well that is what your neck (cervical spine) does all day, 24/7/, 365 days a year.

Your neck and shoulder muscles work very hard holding up your head. Your neck, or cervical spine, is made up of seven vertebra that must be in the proper position or relationship to each other for them to work correctly and efficiently. A structural misalignment of even the tiniest amount can cause muscle pain and discomfort, this is one of the main causes of headaches. This misalignment can put pressure, either directly or indirectly, on the nerves exiting the spinal cord at the affected level. Doctors of Chiropractic call this a Subluxation.

Some over-the-counter and prescribed pain relievers might dull the pain, but they ignore the underlying cause!

Chiropractors see this sort of thing all the time. It’s almost routine. Chiropractic care has a long history of producing excellent benefits with those suffering from neck pain. And we do it naturally, without dangerous drugs or risky, dangerous, surgery.

Chiropractors get great results with many types of neck pain.

At Kolarik Family Chiropractic we specialize in reducing interference to the nervous system in the neck. Many of our patients find that chiropractic care gives them relief from neck and shoulder complaints.

Medical -vs- Chiropractic Wellness Care.

Obviously, the biggest difference between medical and Chiropractic wellness care is just that: medicine. Today’s medical doctors are still treating symptoms instead of the actual cause of the problem. These drugs usually create their own list of symptoms that must also be “treated” with more drugs. It’s a nearly never ending self perpetuating cycle that does not lead to good health and wellness; but to illness, disease and dependence.

Most medical doctors do not look for the cause of a symptom, ignoring the lifestyle influences that led to the problem. Drugs typically lead to a false sense of health, by hiding symptoms, that avoids changes that will actually lead to wellness.

Doctors of Chiropractic recognize that symptoms are there for a reason. Symptoms are a siren going off letting you know that there is a problem here. Chiropractors look for the cause of a problem that the symptom has alerted you to.

Chiropractic doctors examine your spine looking for spinal misalignments. Misalignment’s in the spine can cause an interference with the information carried by the nerves exiting the spine at that particular level.

Facts About Wellness Care

  1. Symptoms are NOT the problem, symptoms are an alert to an underlying problem and should be listened too, not hidden and masked with drugs (medications).
  2. Our body has an inborn ability to self-regulate, self-replicate, and adapt to our surroundings. When we have a misalignment in our spine, aka subluxation, these self preserving functions do not work as intended; this results in absence of health and wellness.
  3. Chiropractic wellness practitioners do not diagnose or treat conditions and diseases, but instead locate and correct (remove) subluxations, allowing your body to function at a higher level of health.
  4. Doctors of Chiropractic recognize the value preventative care compared to medical symptom based care. With regular chiropractic adjustments, spinal health is maintained, promoting proper nervous symptom function and allowing for our bodies to preform at it’s best.

True wellness can only be achieved when all of the body’s systems are receiving their signals from the brain and are properly providing your body with what it needs to not only survive, but to thrive. All too often, we mistake an absence of symptoms as good health, when the two are not even related.

From early childhood we are conditioned to believe there is a medical drug or surgical procedure to fix every symptom. Now, with a better understanding of wellness, start doing something that will actually promote wellness in your body, and not hinder it with drugs.

Headaches and Chiropractic.

Headaches are common, about 1 in 6 (45 million) Americans suffer from chronic headaches, but they’re not normal.

We live in a world where we want it now, hence the culture on drugs we live in. Many people with headaches will take some kind of anti-inflammatory to help relieve their suffering and many times it works – at least for a while. You need to ask yourself what is causing the inflammation in the first place? Chiropractors look for the underlying cause of your headache.

One of the most  common causes of headaches is from spinal bones in the neck that have lost their normal position and are not supporting your head properly . These misalignment’s are called subluxations  and they affect nerves, muscles and even the blood supply to your head.

A thorough Chiropractic examination locates subluxations that could be causing your headaches. If subluxations are present, you’re likely to benefit from Chiropractic spinal adjustments.

Children, Ear Aches and Chiropractic.

When children have ear infections parents can feel pretty helpless, not really knowing what to do.

Give Chiropractic a try.

With a properly working nerve system a child’s body has an amazing ability to heal itself. But, when the integrity of their nervous system has become impaired their immune response is also impaired and unable to fight infections as well.

It may surprise some to learn that the nervous system controls everything. When this nerve system becomes compromised it may also be accompanied with muscle tension (ache) . This tension can reduce the effectiveness of the Lymphatic system to properly drain compounding the problem.

The Chiropractic approach is simple. Chiropractic care isn’t a treatment for infections of any type. We look for muscle tensions and misalignment of the bones of the spine that may be affecting the child’s nervous system and their ability to fight infection. Chiropractors call this a Subluxation. If we find a Subluxation we gently reduce it with effective and safe chiropractic spinal adjustments. This helps to improve the nervous system, resulting in an improved immune response. Properly adjusting a child or even an infant typically requires only a gentle, light touch or light pressure in the right direction.

Children, and parents, love the Chiropractic approach. Everything is explained in advance. Chiropractic adjustments are safe and effective. Chiropractic is the natural choice.

Back Pain And Chiropractic.

Back pain is a signal that something is not right. A sign that you have a problem that need addressing. The pain is a symptom of the problem, not the problem itself. Are you taking a drug, either over the counter or prescribed, to hide the symptom and ignore the cause?

There are many causes of back pain.

A couple of the more common causes are:

1)  The bones of you spine, specifically in your low back or lumbar region are misaligned. This misalignment is called a Subluxation and causes pain.

2) You may have experienced a trauma that has injured a disc and caused it to bulge. Discs are the soft, pulpy, tissue between the spinal bones. When the disc bulge they may put pressure on a nearby nerve causing pain.

What are you going to do about it?

A) Ignore it. (Most likely the condition will worsen, not a good idea)

B) Physical therapy. (Stresses misaligned joints, does not address the cause, not a good idea)

C) Drugs, either prescribed or over the counter. (Numbs the body, masks the symptom, does not address the cause, not a good idea)

D) Surgery. (Dangerous, very expensive, dismal success rate, usually leads to additional unnecessary surgeries, does not address the cause, not a good idea)

According to Dr. Norman Marcus is Clinical Associate Professor in Anesthesiology and Psychiatry and Director of Muscle Pain Research at the N.Y.U. School of Medicine, a past president of the American Academy of Pain Medicine and founder and medical director of the Norman Marcus Pain Institute, which is dedicated to pain elimination, rather than pain management. In an article on EmaxHealth written by Ruzanna Harutyunyan. “… Dr. Marcus notes that most MRIs of the low back are read as abnormal, frequently with herniated or bulging disks, and that as many as 50 percent of people with herniated disks have no back pain, while as many as 70 percent of those with degenerated lumbar disks have no pain. He cautions that, conversely, discovering herniated or degenerated disks in the spine of a patient in pain should never automatically lead to the assumption that the pain is originating from those disks. …”

The Chiropractic Approach.

Specific chiropractic spinal adjustments help to restore misaligned bones to a more normal position thus improving spinal function. Allowing soft tissue to heal, inflammation to go down, pain to ease, and improving spinal stability.
